STATEMENT REGARDING BBL POSTPONEMENT 17TH MAR 20
The Plymouth Raiders have been in regular contact with the British Basketball League (BBL) over the past few weeks, and as one of the owners of the league, we have had detailed input into the evolving situation surrounding COVID-19.
It is with great deliberation that the BBL Board has reached the decision to postpone the 2019-20 season with immediate effect. Taking into consideration the advice from the British Government and the Chief Medical Officer, there appears little other option at this current time, with the peak of the virus outbreak still not predicted to arrive until late May.
Our first concern is always for the welfare of our fans, players, and staff, and by postponing the season at this point we agree this is the best course of action to help everyone stay safe.
On behalf of the Raiders’ Board of Directors, Richard Mollard said, “Basketball brings communities together for the better, but sadly coming together is currently the one thing we need to avoid, so this decision is a correct and necessary one.
“These are truly unprecedented times and something none of us have witnessed in our lifetime.
“We will be doing our upmost to continue to interact with you all during the extended break, and to bring you regular club updates via Raiders TV and all our usual social media outlets over the coming weeks and months so you will still get your basketball fix.”
“Whether the league will be able to continue, only time will tell, but on behalf of everyone at the Club I’d like to wish all our fans, club members, sponsors and partners the very best, thank you all sincerely for your fantastic support so far this season, through thick and thin, and we will keep you all posted as an when we receive further updates.
“Please stay safe, please adhere to all the latest medical advice, and please continue to keep your passion for the Raiders going through these difficult months.”
The Club can also confirm that we have been working to support the repatriation of Matt Scott, Gary Talton and Kostas Jonuska who should all arrive home on Wednesday at the latest. We sincerely thank them for their service this season and wish them all the best with their travels.
